Selling or buying a car isn't just a case of handing over the keys in exchange for money. You will also need to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Informing the DVLA of the change is a legal necessity and you will regret not doing so should the vehicle be involved in an accident. As a seller, failing to change the owner's details can leave you liable for anything that happens to the vehicle, regardless of any verbal agreements.
The good news is that the process is straightforward and will usually cost you nothing.
To change who owns the car, you will need to record the change on the vehicle's logbook, also known as the V5C. This can be done by posting the logbook and appropriate forms to the DVLA, while you can also do it online.
Informing the DVLA online is usually the best option because it's easier, updates faster, and prevents anything from getting lost in the post. You will need the vehicle's 11-digit number on the V5C document handy when going online to change ownership. The DVLA will send a confirmation email, which can also be sent to the new owner provided you give their email address.
While the process is fairly straightforward, it's still possible you might face an unexpected obstacle. If so, then give us a call and we will be more than happy to help you.
